Beware of Storm Chasers!

Monday, May 22, 2017

By now, the hail storm is old news, but the damage that it caused will be a headache for many months to come. Not only do homeowners have to deal with the hassle of replacing their roofs, siding, windows and more, they have to contend with fly-by-night storm chasers that come into town.

The basic scenario goes like this; there is a huge storm, damage abounding and then boom, you hear a knock at your door and it is someone offering you a great deal to repair your damaged roof, windows and siding. They will usually give you a quote and then ask for a payment upfront for the work, some will even say that they are working on behalf of your insurance company. They then will take your money and never complete the work, or do a poor job that will require repair in only a couple of years. Here are a few tips to help you avoid falling victim to their scam:

  1. Many times these Storm Chasers watch the weather reports, and go to communities after they have been hit by a big storm. They will do whatever they can to look like they belong in the community. They might say they were sent by your insurance company, an old contractor or even the original roofing manufacturer. Always be sure to ask for credentials or proof they are who they say they are.
  2. Scammers often go door to door, offering to start work immediately for payment upfront, they might “find” additional damage that does not exist and build that into the price. Don’t agree to any repairs or payment until your insurance adjuster has been out to see the damage.
  3. Don’t agree to any payments up front, any reputable company will not ask for the full payment before work has started. Never pay cash, make sure to pay with a check or credit card for the deposit and make sure to get a contract that outlines the entire scope of the project.
  4. Always do your research, before agreeing to any work, go on the BBB website to make sure they are a verified, accredited business. Get a copy of their insurance, and even make sure that their vehicle has the business information prominently displayed.

These are just a few tips to avoid fly-by-night contractor scams and for getting the best value for the work you need.
